Rising PROfile: Nicole Zongus Lands a GIANT Career

I always hear how hard it is for recent grads to find a job, so it’s nice to hear when someone actually lands a career after graduation.

Nicole Zongus was lucky enough to get a job with the San Francisco Giants just one month after graduating from Chico State in 2009, with degrees in recreation management and journalism.

Nicole works as a Junior Giants Coordinator, in the Giants Community Fund – the nonprofit sector of the San Francisco Giants. The flagship program, the Junior Giants, provides free, noncompetitive, co-ed baseball to over 20,000 underserved youth across California, Nevada and Oregon. Her main function is supporting 85 leagues by coordinating logistics, developing materials for the education, health and violence prevention programs, as well as planning Junior Giants events at AT&T Park.

After hitting the big leagues, Nicole shared some insights on how she landed this amazing job so quickly.

I mainly networked, did several information interviews, took advantage of internship opportunities…[and] stayed focused on finding a position that I felt was a good fit and applied my skills best.

Now in her third season with the Giants, Nicole loves working in an exciting environment that combines giving back to the community with major league sports.

My favorite days at work are when we have Junior Giants events and get to interact with the youth we serve and see the full impact of the Junior Giants program in their lives.

When she’s not working, Nicole likes to travel, go to concerts and enjoy the city life with friends, family and her dog, Bernard.

When asked how she plans to keep rising in her professional career, Nicole replied,

I hope to stay with the San Francisco Giants, so I try to continue [to] find ways I can improve in my position and add extra value to the Junior Giants program and the Giants Community Fund, overall.  I also set up goals and markers I’d like to meet in order to keep moving upward in my career.

Her best advice for job hunters is to use their connections, take advantage of volunteer and internship opportunities and to not get discouraged. Although you may not be as lucky in finding a job right away, it’s encouraging to hear about the successes of others because it gives you the hope of one day landing your own GIANT career.

  1. Great job once again. The Pro-file addition is also great. Very inspiring and uplifting offering hope to young professionals either looking for their first job or “rising” up to another. The real life testamonials speak volumes.
