Two Things My Mom Taught Me About Business

I’ve always looked up to my mom, Heidi Casale.

It’s not just because she’s the life of the party, beautiful or even an amazing cook, it’s because she’s a seriously savvy business person.

In her early 20s, she was a rising star in the travel business, who took advantage of every opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the hospitality industry to set herself up for success. After years of business travel and working in a fast-paced agency, she started her own travel agency called Port of Travel at 34.

From there, she steadily grew her business, managed an entire agency of professionals and became a sought out agent in Santa Cruz County. Three years later when I came along, her business was busier than ever, but she still managed to be a successful business woman and mother.

Years later when booking travel online became the norm and the tragic events of 9/11 devastated the travel industry, my mom still found ways to keep her doors open. Now, 28 years later, she is still running Port of Travel, tailoring specialty trips for her clients and leading large groups to amazing destinations all of the world.

Looking back at her professional career, without even knowing it, my mom has taught me two very important business lessons;

  1. Aim high
  2. Never give up

My mom is a constant reminder that you can achieve anything you want if you work hard enough and never give up. From starting your own business, to balancing work and life, to recovering from a lull in your career, she is one of the greatest inspirations in my career and life.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom.
